British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several entry passages providing entry to the site... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - established extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among thousands of UK service members on duty over the holidays. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

In December, the US military conducted what it termed a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in the country, following an assault killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
