The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

As any prominent awards ceremony approaches, you'll find a clamor for introducing additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of followers who have specialized interests.

My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. The demand is this: There should be a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is an essential concession for the industry of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Think about these outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release was excluded that year
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often small games, but the art behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for many years.

The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, while interacting with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
